The Cumberland & Knox RR is the newest operator to bid for freight service and excursions from Brunswick to Rockland. This line was built as the Knox & Lincoln in 1872. Originally it started at Woolwich, on the other side of the Kennebec from Bath and went to Rockland. This is the same line that was used by the Maine Eastern.
Maine Switching Services, the actual operator, has expressed interest in operations on the lower road as well. The only things left on this section of the line are warehouses as far as I know but the state might be interested in passenger services to the capitol. This might also be that they need this permission to store cars on the lower end of the line.
